OLRN Article in ACCESS, Summer 2002

In her opening session, Joan Leishman discussed the beginnings of the OLRN Collaboration. She referred to an article that appeared in ACCESS in the Summer edition 2002, where Gladys Watson presents OLRN, it's purpose and objectives.

What is OLRN?

In June 2001, Margaret (Peg) Allen produced a report for the Ontario Learning Resources Nursing Project (OLRN). The Provincial government mandated the requirement that all new Registered Nurses have a Baccalaureate Degree. This meant a collaboration would need to exist between Colleges and Universities that had varying levels of library resources.
Peg put forth two Guiding principles
• All nursing students, faculty, librarians, and preceptors should have access to a common set of knowledge-based nursing and interdisciplinary health information resources to support their education, research, and clinical practice.
• For the most effective pricing, the colleges and universities should license resources on a consortium basis.

Since 2001, the OLRN group has worked to these guiding principles in negotiating for a set of core resources that all BScN students should have access to during their studies.
