Rick Vanderlee, Dean of the Faculty of Applied and Professional Studies, Nipissing University will share with us A New Discovery Paradigm for Electronic Resources

With University of Western Ontario Doctoral Student Richard Booth we will explore The Digital World, Nursing Education, and the Future Potential
This presentation will examine the rise of social computing, eHealth,
and Web 2.0 technology in the education of nursing students. The
topics of collaboration and scholarship beyond the curriculum will be
explored to help outline recommendations for nursing education.
Implications and areas for collaboration between nursing educators and
health science librarians will also be presented.

Our first speaker will be Joan Leishman, Deputy Chief Librarian and Director of Science Libraries at the University of Toronto Libraries.

Joan will provide us with an Introduction to OLRN describing OLRN's beginnings nearly eight years ago. A key player in OLRN's early days, Joan will discuss the rationale behind OLRN's inception, and the methods used to build the consortium.

Parking on campus at U of T

There is a fair amount of parking near the Gerstein Science Information Centre, and if you arrive before 9am you have a good chance of getting a spot along King's College Circle. This PDF document (Adobe Reader required) shows the location of City of Toronto "Pay and Display" machines that visitors can use to pay for parking.

There is a daily rate of $10 to $15 depending on the lot

What is OLRN?

In June 2001, Margaret (Peg) Allen produced a report for the Ontario Learning Resources Nursing Project (OLRN). The Provincial government mandated the requirement that all new Registered Nurses have a Baccalaureate Degree. This meant a collaboration would need to exist between Colleges and Universities that had varying levels of library resources.
Peg put forth two Guiding principles
• All nursing students, faculty, librarians, and preceptors should have access to a common set of knowledge-based nursing and interdisciplinary health information resources to support their education, research, and clinical practice.
• For the most effective pricing, the colleges and universities should license resources on a consortium basis.

Since 2001, the OLRN group has worked to these guiding principles in negotiating for a set of core resources that all BScN students should have access to during their studies.

Welcome!

On May 12th we will be holding a stakeholders Meeting at the University of Toronto, Gerstein Science Information Centre, which will include presentations around a variety of aspects of Nursing Education including resources, scholarship, collaboration between Colleges and Universities and collaboration between librarians and faculty. The intent of the day is for library and faculty representatives from all Ontario sites to meet again (it has been 8 years) and to do some learning and sharing. We hope that each institution will be able to send a Nursing or Health Sciences Librarian/Library Technician as well as a Nursing Faculty member.
Once we have a complete itinerary, specific information about the presentations, and any additional information about the event, we will post it here.
